HTML small: Main Tips

  • HTML small tags turn the text between them smaller by one size.
  • It cannot make the text appear smaller than the browser's minimum font size.
  • You must use both opening and closing small tags.
  • HTML small tags don't have any specific attributes but support global ones.

Using Small Tags

HTML small font tags reduce the size of the text by one size (i.e., from medium to small):

Example
<p>Paragraph with <small>smaller text</small> in it.</p>

The following CSS can be optionally defined for the HTML small element to maintain consistency over different browsers:

Example
small {
    font-size: small;
}

Purpose of HTML Small Font

You may use small font for various needs, including styling. However, in HTML5 it gained a new purpose.

It is now common to use HTML small text for side comments and fine print. It often includes legal text or copyright information:

Example
<p>Take charge of your future and start learning from BitDegree online courses!</p>
<hr>
<p><small>Copyright © 2019 BitDegree.org | hello@bitdegree.org</small></p>
