How to Bold Text in HTML

When you need to mark some text as more important, you can use HTML strong tags:

<p>This is <strong>important</strong> text.</p>

Most browsers will show it as bolded text. However, some older browsers might underline it instead.

CSS vs. <strong> vs. <b>

If you are looking at how to bold text in HTML, you should know there are actually three options:

• CSS font-weight property
• <strong>
• <b>

If all you need is bold styling, you can modify the CSS font-weight property to bold:

strong { 
    font-weight: bold;
}

Then, there are two types of tags in HTML for bold text. <b> is good when you need to style your text in bold, but without any extra emphasis.

HTML <strong> tags have more of a semantic meaning. They represent text that is more important than the remaining part.

<p>This <b>sentence</b> is <b>bolded</b> randomly - <b>no</b> bolded
<b>word</b> is <b>more</b> important <b>in</b> any <b>manner</b>.</p>

<p>Now in <strong>this</strong> sentence, we put
special <strong>emphasis</strong> where it <strong>matters</strong>.</p>
