Belgium’s MP Christophe De Beukelaer - First EU Politician to take Salary in BTC

Belgium’s MP Christophe De Beukelaer - First EU Politician to take Salary in BTC

As celebrities and politicians in the west started taking payments in the form of Bitcoin, it seems that the trend is slowly creeping into Europe.

Based on the report by a local media organization in Brussels called Bruzz, one parliament member will be receiving his salary in crypto via the Bit4You exchange. Christophe De Beukelaer will be converting his 5,500 EUR salary into Bitcoin, which is 0.18 BTC at current rates.

According to the MP, he is eager to introduce blockchain technologies to more politicians. In fact, his decision to accept a Bitcoin salary was highly influenced by NYC Mayor Eric Adams, who recently talked about the recent market crash. He even quoted the mayor, stating:

"New York City Mayor Eric Adams has spent three months collecting his Bitcoin salary to make New York the Bitcoin hub. I think it is not too late for Brussels and Belgium to play a leading role in the crypto-currency industry."

Likewise, the Mayor of Miami Francis Suarez has also talked about introducing a more blockchain-focused approach into the industry. He even made an appearance at a conference with the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes who decided to allocate 1% of the city’s treasury to Bitcoin.

Celebrities like Atlanta-based rapper Lil Baby said that he would much rather get paid in cryptocurrencies than fiat money, alongside NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. who has already signed a one-year partnership deal with CashApp to get paid in Bitcoin.
