Tether Launches MiningOS: Open-Source Power for Bitcoin Miners
Key Takeaways
- Tether launched MiningOS, an open-source system that helps users manage Bitcoin mining without closed software;
- MiningOS lets miners self-host, connect devices through peer-to-peer networks, and adjust performance settings;
- Released under Apache 2.0, MiningOS supports openness and compatibility across various setups, from small to industrial.
The announcement appeared on X on February 2. According to Tether, MOS is a modular and scalable system that lets users run and manage mining operations without relying on closed or proprietary tools.
On the official MOS website, the company explains that most mining software has traditionally been limited by closed systems. MOS is meant to change that by supporting collaboration and openness within the Bitcoin network.

The new system allows miners to host their own operations and link devices through a built-in peer-to-peer network. It also includes an interface where users can adjust performance settings to suit their hardware size or energy limits.
Paolo Ardoino, Tether’s CEO, described MiningOS as a “complete operational platform” that works for both small-scale and industrial-level miners. He emphasized that it can support operations across multiple sites.
Tether had mentioned plans for an open-source mining system back in June 2025. At the time, it said it wanted new participants to enter mining without relying on costly third-party tools.
Tether added that MiningOS is available under the Apache 2.0 License, which means anyone can use, modify, or improve it. The software runs on Holepunch peer-to-peer protocols.
