Canaan Turns Mining Heat Into Energy for Manitoba Greenhouses

Canaan, a company known for making mining hardware for Bitcoin BTC $82,531.50 , has launched a new project that uses the heat from its computers to warm greenhouses in Canada.

The company announced that it is working with Bitforest Investment on a small pilot program in Manitoba.

The plan involves a 3-megawatt setup that will capture heat from Canaan’s Avalon computing system and use it to support greenhouse operations.

The project is expected to run for two years. During this time, Canaan’s liquid-cooling systems will collect heat from its computers and use it to preheat water for the greenhouses.

Canaan chair and CEO Nangeng Zhang said:

With this proof-of-concept, we are not just deploying computing equipment for one project, we hope to build a data-driven, replicable model.

By using heat that would otherwise be wasted, the project could lower the greenhouses’ dependence on fuel-powered boilers. Canaan said it plans to install 360 liquid-cooled servers to support the system.

Bitforest, which operates tomato-growing facilities in Manitoba, said the project will help show how computing byproducts can be turned into useful energy.

If successful, the idea could serve as a model for using data center heat to support other agricultural or industrial activities in cold-climate regions.

Canaan has teamed up with SynVista Energy, a green energy developer, to create a system that links renewable power with crypto mining operations. How does it work? Read the full story.
