Sam Altman Declares ‘Code Red’ to Supercharge ChatGPT Development

Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, has reportedly told employees to focus all efforts on enhancing ChatGPT after labeling its development a "code red" priority, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

In an internal note cited by the news outlet, Altman said the company needs to make ChatGPT more useful in daily interactions.

He pointed out areas that still need work, including giving the chatbot better answers to a range of questions, improving its response time, and making it more dependable.

To make room for the renewed focus on ChatGPT, Altman’s memo said OpenAI would pause development of other plans, including Pulse, a personal assistant tool, advertising work, and AI products aimed at areas like healthcare and shopping.

According to the report, teams working on ChatGPT will now meet daily to track progress.

The Wall Street Journal also noted that OpenAI is not yet profitable and must continue to raise funds to sustain its operations, unlike Google, which can rely on revenue from its existing businesses to finance AI projects.

The report added that Google’s Gemini user base grew from 450 million in July to 650 million in October, boosted by the release of an image generator.

The push comes as OpenAI faces growing competition. The Journal reported that Google recently launched a newer version of its Gemini model, which scored higher than OpenAI’s systems in benchmark tests.

On November 18, Google launched Gemini 3, the latest version of its large language model (LLM), which outperforms GPT-5 Pro in major benchmarks. How? Read the full story.
