Minecraft Excludes Integration of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT)

Mojang studio takes a stand against Non-Fungible Token incorporation in Minecraft.

Minecraft, a Microsoft-owned Mojang studio game, which first saw the daylight in 2011, has decided to ban non-fungible tokens (NFT) and blockchain integration from its game.

According to the official announcement shared on July 20, the company believes that this action is necessary to ensure a safe and inclusive experience for all players. The report states:

...blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods.

In the blog post, the authors claim that the main reason for such a decision is that NFTs bring “digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together.”

Referencing this issue, Mojang studios mentioned that “digital ownership” can be gained through having NFT projects, which are connected to Minecraft world files or skins. Moreover, the creation of collectible Minecraft NFTs, where players would be able to earn them inside or outside the game would also highly affect the situation.

The company highlights that it's the possibility of “models of scarcity and exclusion” that  NFTs have, which cannot be aligned with the values of the game

It’s most likely that this will not make the biggest difference for the majority of Minecraft players, however, it may affect those who are trying to profit from in-game NFTs.

After sharing the news on Twitter, the Mojang studio has received many responses from players around the world. Some claim “it's the worst decision in game history”, and others are supporting this decision with praise.

However, it's not the first case when popular games are avoiding NFT integration. This path was also chosen by Valve, the owner of marketplace Steam, and Epic Game, the creators of Fortnite.
