Jack Dorsey Launches Bitchat, a Decentralized Messaging App Over Bluetooth
Key Takeaways
- Jack Dorsey's Bitchat lets users send encrypted messages via Bluetooth without internet access;
- Bitchat uses a mesh network where devices relay messages, no servers or accounts required;
- Messages are temporary, private, and never stored, ideal for offline or sensitive communication.
Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has introduced a test version of a decentralized messaging app called Bitchat.
The app allows people to send messages directly from one device to another using only Bluetooth.
On July 7, Dorsey posted on X that he had spent time learning about how Bluetooth mesh systems work. He also explored topics such as message storage, encryption, and relays, which are technical components that help power the app.

Bitchat runs on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks. This means that every device can pass messages to other nearby devices, which creates a chain that allows the message to travel further than one Bluetooth connection would normally reach.
According to Bitchat’s white paper, the app does not need logins, phone numbers, email addresses, or central servers.
Messages stay in memory and disappear over time. All messages are protected using end-to-end encryption, whether they are sent privately, in a group, or as public broadcasts.
Unlike apps such as WhatsApp or Messenger, which are owned by companies that often use personal data, Bitchat avoids storing user information. It is designed to work even when there is no working internet access.
The app also includes group chat rooms, which are labeled using hashtags and can be protected with passwords. When a user is offline, messages meant for them can be stored temporarily on another device and delivered later.
