AI Takes Over Research Tasks, Scientists Voice New Fears
Key Takeaways
- Kipping said many scientists now rely on AI for work they once handled themselves, and the group agreed this shift is widespread;
- Researchers showed AI tools that create code and research material from short prompts, and some now use them for daily tasks like email;
- Attendees saw AI as necessary for modern science but worried about skill loss and breakthroughs that humans may not understand.
Columbia University astrophysicist David Kipping explained that artificial intelligence (AI) completes much of the work they once carried out themselves.
During his Cool Worlds podcast, Kipping said, "This wasn't just the voices in my own head. Everybody was saying the same thing".
According to Kipping, the participants demonstrated how agent-style AI tools can produce code, analysis, and research-ready material from only a few short prompts.

Kipping also described a physicist who let these tools manage email, files, and calendar events. That researcher dismissed concerns about data access and said the practical benefits outweigh the risks.
He said many attendees believed that using such tools has become essential for anyone who wants to stay competitive in modern research.
At the same time, they voiced concerns about what this shift means for scientists’ own abilities. Some drew comparisons to relying on GPS and losing basic navigation skills. Others raised the possibility that AI might push fields such as fusion research and drug discovery.
Kipping concluded, "Maybe no human being will understand how this fusion machine works. That frightens me a little bit. I don't know that I want to live in a world where everything around me is just magic".
Meanwhile, a crypto engineer has released a website that allows artificial intelligence (AI) systems to hire people for real-world tasks. What is it? Read the full story.
