Gate (previously Gate.io) is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange (CEX). Established in 2013, it provides spot and derivatives markets, including perpetual futures, delivery futures, and options. It’s considered one of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges by portfolio diversification, as there are more than 3,800 coins listed.
The Gate crypto exchange is compliant with KYC and AML regulations. All users who want to withdraw, deposit or use any of Gate's services, must prove their identity. For the protection of its customers, Gate provides Yubikey support, two-factor authentication, SSL technology, and a transparent reserve worth $10 billion (audited by Armanino LLP).
Gate entities have obtained or completed regulatory registrations, licenses, authorizations, or approvals across various jurisdictions, such as Lithuania, Argentina, Malta, Italy, Gibraltar, the Bahamas, and Hong Kong. In 2024, Gate Group acquired the Japanese cryptocurrency service provider Coin Master. In 2025, Gate Technology FZE ("Gate Dubai"), a part of Gate Group, obtained a full operational license from the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in Dubai.
Most of the features available on the Gate crypto exchange's web version can also be accessed on their mobile app.
Like many blockchain-based exchanges, Gate has its own token, Gate Token (GT). Users who hold GT tokens may be eligible for discounts on some of the Gate crypto fees.
Markets
The Gate crypto prices are presented by real-time market capitalization and professional trend analysis. The platform calculates the prices by taking the global trading volume and using the average price formula.
It’s a crypto-crypto exchange, meaning all Gate trading pairs are between cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins. Users can deposit or withdraw their digital assets. There are no deposit fees. Withdrawal fees may differ depending on the cryptocurrency used.
Gate provides useful data that not all other exchanges do, like a crypto asset heat map, an investment map, crypto sector popularity, and so on.
The Gate spot market offers three order types:
- Limit orders – you choose the exact price at which you want to buy or sell. Your order only executes if the market reaches that price;
- Market orders – you buy or sell right away at the best available price in the market;
- Stop-Limit orders – you set a “stop” price that, once reached, turns your order into a limit order at your chosen price. It only executes within those price limits.
The Gate spot market also enables bot trading, offering various strategies, including grid trading, which is popular in volatile markets like crypto. Besides grid bots, the Gate crypto exchange also offers average cost bots, passive arbitrage bots, expert bots, and financial bots.
By the way, Gate crypto exchange users can participate in copy trading. It’s a mechanism where a user copies the same positions that another, usually more prominent trader, has taken. A strategy bot can be used to preview potential trading strategies. 5% of the profits earned via the bot go towards the strategy provider.
Fees
There are 17 tiers to the spot and futures trading fees system, going from VIP 0 to VIP 16. The fees are determined by the 30-day Gate volume, 14-day average GT holdings or your account asset value and use the maker/taker model.
Speaking of spot fees, in VIP 0, the volume does not exceed $60,000, and the fees are 0.1% for both market makers and takers. GT token holders can get a discount and pay 0.09%, though. As you increase your VIP level, the fees gradually become lower.
Starting with VIP 10, with a Gate trade volume of at least $100 million (or 100,000 GT holdings/$2 million account value), market makers are not required to pay any fees, while the taker fees are progressively reduced.
At VIP 16, the required 30-day volume must be at least $3 billion (or your account value has to be at least $100 million), and the makers and takers pay 0% and 0.02%, respectively (VIP level based on GT tokens ends at VIP 14, so you can reach the highest levels only by trading volume or account balance).
The Gate futures market also uses a 17-tier model. However, there are no discounts for GT token holders (but you get lower fees if you have points in your futures account). Similarly to the spot market, at VIP 0, the Gate trade volume for 30 days is under $60,000. At VIP 16, the required volume must be at least $3 billion.
USDT perpetual fees start at 0.02% for makers and 0.05% for takers. They gradually decrease as you increase your VIP level, with VIP 16 charging 0% for makers and 0.016% for takers. BTC perpetual fees start at 0.015% for makers and 0.05% for takers. USDT delivery fees start at -0.015% for makers and 0.016% for takers.
The Gate derivatives market also offers options trading. Short-term options and simulation trading for call/put options that are set to expire in 1, 4, or 24 hours are available. Gate crypto fees of 0.03% apply for options for both makers and takers at any level.
On top of that, customers can trade on perpetual markets using ETF-leveraged tokens. They offer 3x and 5x leverage on long bullish and short bearish tokens. Users are required to pay daily Gate exchange fees of 0.1% for leveraged token management.
Other Services
While it only supports crypto-to-crypto trading pairs, you can simply buy or sell crypto for fiat using Gate's Buy Crypto feature.
If you want to exchange crypto-to-crypto quickly, you can use Convert, which is a one-click cryptocurrency swapping tool. It uses the Gate crypto price calculations for quick conversions between assets. The swapping amount limit depends on the selected cryptocurrencies, but there are no Gate exchange fees or slippage.
Besides trading-related features, there's Gate Earn that offers various investment mechanisms, including cryptocurrency loans. The lending system employs a 17-tier fee system as well. At VIP 0, the loan interest is 18% with no discount. At tier 16, the interest is 5.4%, and a 70% discount is applied.
Moreover, there are staking options, structured investment products, Auto-Invest, Quant Fund, and many other earning features.
Though the whole Gate ecosystem is much larger than that, too. There's MemeBox, Gate Web3, Gate Pay, Gate Labs, Gate Life, Gate Ventures, Gate Learn & Research, Gate Post, Gate Live, and Gate Charity.
About the Company
Gate was initially founded as a Chinese exchange Bter.com in 2013. Following the change of policy regarding cryptocurrencies in China in 2017, the team, led by Dr. Han, announced that the project would be rebranded as the Gate.io cryptocurrency exchange.
Dr. Han is the founder and CEO of Gate.
Prior to the rebranding, in February 2015, the Bter exchange was hacked. During the attack, more than 7,000 BTC, then valued at around $1.75 million, were taken from the cold wallets belonging to the exchange.
Initially, the platform used the yuan as its main currency for fiat-to-crypto trading. However, since the rebranding, the exchange has shifted to a predominantly crypto-crypto trading model.
Gate.io was once again rebranded to Gate in May 2025 (then it also adopted a new international domain Gate.com).
GateChain is a public chain that was launched in 2019. In addition to the Gate cryptocurrency exchange, the company also runs a blockchain project incubation and discovery program.
In 2020, Gate started a GT token buyback model. It uses 20% of the company’s annual profits to buy back GT tokens, which are then burned. This is done to ensure the stability of the Gate crypto price.
From early 2024 through April 2025, Gate Group cemented its global compliance by securing digital-asset approvals in the Bahamas, launching Gate OTC Malta, acquiring Japan's cryptocurrency service provider Coin Master, and obtaining a full VARA license in Dubai. During that period, Gate grew its user base to over 24 million by May 2025.
Simultaneously, the company maintained a high-profile presence in the Web3 ecosystem, sponsoring Coinfest Asia in Milan, illuminating Tokyo Tower at WebX2024, hosting activities at TOKEN2049 Singapore, backing Dubai Blockchain Life, and powering Consensus and the Token of Love festival.
Rounding out its strategy, Gate forged major sports partnerships: as sleeve sponsor of FC Internazionale Milano since the 2024/25 season and, beginning in 2025, as a prominent sponsor of Oracle Red Bull Racing in Formula 1 to drive broader blockchain adoption.
