sUSD is a synthetic token that is based on the Synthetix protocol, which essentially is a derivatives liquidity protocol. The main focus of Synthetix is the development of synthetic assets.
Synthetic assets (Synths) are derivatives on Ethereum that offer exposure to real-world assets. Users can utilize synthetic assets to anticipate price changes, obtain access to markets and assets that are otherwise not accessible, and mitigate or lower risks.
There are different types of synthetic assets, which depend on the type of assets they aim to track. This includes forex, commodity, crypto, index, and inverse synths.
sUSD belongs to the category of forex synthetic assets because it tracks the price of the US Dollar. In order to do that, sUSD uses a decentralized network of oracles provided by Chainlink. Thus, the sUSD price stays stable as it follows $1.
Tokenomics of sUSD
sUSD is minted by staking SNX tokens as collateral on Mintr. SNX is the native token of the Synthtetix protocol. The max supply of sUSD is 142,399,574. This means that, once the supply is reached, no new sUSD tokens can be minted.
