Key Takeaways
- Watch the Skies, a Swedish sci-fi film, is being released in the US using AI-powered visual dubbing technology;
- Flawless's TrueSync tool matches English audio to actors’ lip movements, making the film appear naturally shot in English;
- Director Victor Danell says the AI keeps creative control with the original cast while helping the film reach more viewers.
A Swedish science fiction film, Watch the Skies, is about to be released in the United States with the help of a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool.
The movie was originally filmed in Swedish, but when it arrives in US theaters this May, it will appear as though it was made in English from the start.
The film uses "visual dubbing" developed by the AI company Flawless. This technique changes the actors’ on-screen lip movements to match the new dialogue, which makes the English version look more natural.

The same cast re-recorded their lines in English, and Flawless used its TrueSync system to match those recordings with the original footage.
Flawless co-founder Scott Mann described how TrueSync works, where it builds a 3D model of each actor’s face, then adjusts their lip movements to match new audio. Another Flawless tool, called DeepEditor, lets filmmakers move an actor’s performance from one scene to another without needing to film it again.
Director and co-writer Victor Danell said in a behind-the-scenes video that using this technology helped them reach more viewers. He also spoke about the hesitation some people feel when it comes to AI, saying:
A lot of filmmakers and a lot of actors will be afraid of this technology at first, but we have the creative control, and to act out the film in English was a real exciting experience.
Danell added, "It’s still our movie, it’s still the actors’ performance, and that’s the key part".
Meanwhile, Microsoft recently announced plans to integrate Copilot, its AI assistant, into the Xbox platform. What is the purpose of this integration? Read the full story.
