The US Army is increasing its focus on artificial intelligence (AI) to improve readiness and respond to evolving challenges, especially the rising use of unmanned aerial systems.
A recent program introduced AI-powered Ray-Ban glasses for troops working on vehicle repairs.
These smart glasses can capture video during maintenance tasks and use AI to help guide less-experienced soldiers through similar procedures.

According to Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, this project aims to bring commercial technology into military use more quickly than before. While the glasses were developed at great cost by Meta, the Army’s test units are using them at a lower price of about $400 each.
The Army sees the use of AI as a crucial step in protecting forces from drones. General Randy George, Chief of Staff of the Army, emphasized that counter-drone efforts are a leading priority. These systems must be low-cost, quick to respond, and rely on automation to be effective.
Driscoll noted that when dealing with drone swarms, the speed and scale of the threat make a human response alone difficult. That is where automated systems can make a difference, which react faster than humans and with fewer errors.
General George explained that the Army’s goal is to ensure that drone countermeasures remain affordable. If the threat is a drone that costs $5,000, the solution needs to cost less.
