Turkish University Held its First NFT Lecture

Turkish University Held its First NFT Lecture

Turkish government officials have attended a class on non-fungible tokens at Ankara University, which became the first educational institution in the country to teach digital assets.

As NFTs seem to be still quite confusing for most, and several people think of them as just pictures, education on these digital assets, that carry absurd amounts of value, is a great way to encourage creativity and prevent misunderstandings, or even malicious activities related to NFTs.

The Ankara University became the first in the country to add a blockchain-based subject into its curriculum.

According to a local media outlet, the Presidency of the Turkish Republic, alongside the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, took an official class to learn about NFTs at a Turkish university.

The introductory NFT class, taught by one of the professors at the university Buğra Ayan, was attended by high-ranking government officials, including the Head of Turkish Presidency’s Digital Transformation Office Ali Taha Koç, and Özgül Özkan Yavuz, who is the Deputy Minister for Culture and Tourism.

Yavuz spoke on the importance of learning and teaching about digital assets in current times, stating:

"We believe that NFT will trigger artistic creativity, skills and talents among youth. The step that Ankara University has taken by means of expanding awareness on NFT is very important."

Likewise, Koç argued that NFTs are not just "a matter of technology", but they have "a legal dimension which will show how it affects our business." In fact, he is actively looking to give an alternative name for the term "non-fungible token" or "NFT", that would be suitable for Turkish citizens.

The decision to add such a subject to the university’s curriculum might have stemmed from Turkey’s President Erdogan, who, back in January, issued a request for the officials to study and work on cryptocurrencies and the metaverse.
