Roger Ver Appeals to Europe to Block US Tax Evasion Trial

Roger Ver, an early Bitcoin BTC $117,890.02 investor often called "Bitcoin Jesus", has turned to Europe’s human rights court to stop Spain from sending him to the United States.

He filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which ruled that the decision to extradite him violated his basic rights.

According to a report by Bloomberg Law, Ver argued that Spanish courts failed to consider the ambiguity of US tax rules at the time of his alleged crimes. He claimed that being sent to face trial in the US would take away his freedom and expose him to unpredictable punishment.

The US charged Ver in April 2024 with evading about $50 million in taxes by failing to report gains from the sale of Bitcoin in 2017.

Prosecutors also accused him of filing false tax returns and using the mail system to conceal his income. He was arrested in Spain in 2024 at the request of US authorities.

Ver has invested in major crypto companies, such as Kraken $1.92B and Ripple, and has become known for giving away Bitcoin at events. That generosity earned him his nickname, "Bitcoin Jesus", in the crypto industry.

Later, he supported Bitcoin Cash BCH $495.69 , a fork of the main Bitcoin network, and promoted it as the true version of Bitcoin, which sparked plenty of debate in the community.

On July 12, Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash, sought urgent financial assistance to fund his legal defense. What did he say? Read the full story.
