Prism by OpenAI Brings ChatGPT 5.2 Directly Into Research Papers
Key Takeaways
- OpenAI introduced Prism, a web app that connects ChatGPT 5.2 to scientific writing;
- Researchers can write, edit, and collaborate in one place with Prism’s browser tool;
- Prism uses Crixet’s LaTeX system to support equations, citations, and formatting.
OpenAI has introduced Prism, a new online platform designed to help researchers write and edit scientific papers.
According to a January 27 statement, Prism runs in a web browser and connects directly to ChatGPT version 5.2. Researchers can use it to draft, revise, and collaborate on documents without switching between apps.
OpenAI said the tool aims to make the writing process smoother and more interactive for scientific teams.

The company explained that artificial intelligence (AI) is already speeding up progress in many research areas.
OpenAI noted:
Advanced reasoning systems like GPT-5 are helping push the frontiers of mathematics, accelerating the analysis of human immune-cell experiments, and speeding up experimental iteration in molecular biology.
During a town hall event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared that scientists using the company’s newest model are reporting real results. He said, "With 5.2, a special version we use internally, we’re now for the first time hearing from scientists that the scientific progress of these models is no longer super trivial".
Altman added that if a model can make new scientific discoveries, it could also inspire ideas for new products when trained differently.
Prism builds on Crixet, a company OpenAI recently acquired. Crixet created a LaTeX-based writing system that allows scientists to prepare technical papers using commands that handle equations, citations, and formatting.
