OpenAI Acquires Sky to Bring Smarter AI to Mac Users

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications, Inc., the company behind Sky, an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant for Mac computers.

Though not yet available to the public, Sky was designed to act as a helpful layer across a Mac desktop, which offers support while users write, plan, code, or use other software.

The assistant functions by observing what is on the screen and then performing actions based on that context. Sky is meant to follow users' workflow and help manage tasks across various applications without needing constant input.

Ari Weinstein, the CEO and one of the creators of Sky, explained that the goal was to make computers feel more useful and easier to work with. He said:

The founders of Sky have a history of working on popular tools. Weinstein and Conrad Kramer previously developed Workflow, which Apple bought and turned into Shortcuts, a tool still used on Apple devices.

OpenAI did not reveal the cost of the deal. However, public records show that the startup had raised $6.5 million in funding, backed by investors including OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, who supported the company through an external fund.
