Zuckerberg introduced the team in a company announcement, according to a report by CNBC. He stated that faster progress in AI is bringing the idea of "superintelligence" closer to reality. He added, "I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way".
The hiring spree has caused frustration at OpenAI. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen compared the situation to a break-in. He said in an internal memo obtained by Wired:
I feel a visceral feeling right now, as if someone has broken into our home and stolen something.
OpenAI gave its staff a week off to help ease concerns and lower stress. The company is also adjusting compensation and discussing new ways to retain workers, according to Chen.
