The brainchild of prominent figures including Vitalik Buterin, Charles Hoskinson, Gavin Wood, Joseph Lubin, and Anthony Di Iorio, Ethereum's innovation lies in its capacity to host smart contracts, thus enabling developers to construct new blockchain-based applications.
On July 30th, 2015, Stephan Tual, the then CCO of the Ethereum Foundation, announced the network rollout in a blog post, noting:
The vision of a censorship-proof 'world computer' that anyone can program, paying exclusively for what they use and nothing more, is now a reality.
Today, Ethereum has become the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, with its native digital coin, Ether (ETH), commanding a whopping $225 billion. The thriving platform attracts over 1,900 active developers monthly, indicating the network's immense growth and its vitality in the crypto space.
As part of the eight-year celebration, members of the Ethereum community shared their fond reminiscences, casting an eye back over the platform's price trends, development stages, and its overall evolution.
Ryan Sean Adams, the co-host of Bankless, highlighted Ethereum's monumental growth, emphasizing the $400 billion worth of value secured on the platform, the impressive $3.6 billion in annualized profits, and the 17.8 million blocks of digital assets held within the network.
Binance CEO, Changpeng Zhao, took the anniversary as an opportunity to share a nostalgic memory of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin residing with him in Tokyo months before Ethereum’s launch.
Zhao humorously pondered on how buying Ethereum at its inception could have altered his trajectory, stating:
If I had bought ETH then, I might not have had the need or drive to start Binance. Who knows?
Another notable personality, Udi Wertheimer, paid a humorous tribute to Ethereum, dubbing it his "favorite Bitcoin sidechain."
Ether recorded its all-time high of $4,878 on November 10th, 2021. Almost two years later, Ether retails for $1,865.
