Elon Musk’s AI to Judge Federal Jobs—Who Stays and Who Goes?
Key Takeaways
- The DOGE, led by Elon Musk, plans to use AI to review federal employees’ work summaries and assess job necessity;
- An internal memo clarified that responding to the email was voluntary, despite reports suggesting otherwise;
- Musk criticized non-responders and hinted that a second ignored request could lead to termination.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, is considering artificial intelligence (AI) to evaluate federal employees’ responses about their recent work.
According to a report by NBC News, the DOGE sent an email on February 22 asking workers to list five key tasks they completed the previous week.
The reported plan involves feeding employee responses into a large language model (LLM), an AI tool designed to analyze text, to assess whether certain roles are necessary.

The email, sent by the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM), instructed employees to reply with their bullet-point summaries and copy their managers. It also stated, "Please do not send any classified information, links, or attachments. Deadline is this Monday at 11:59 PM EST".
Some reports suggested that ignoring the email could be seen as a resignation, though an internal memo from the Justice Department clarified that participation was voluntary and not responding would not lead to automatic dismissal.
Musk addressed the situation in a February 25 post on X, calling the email request "utterly trivial". He criticized those who failed to respond, claiming some were even encouraged by their managers to ignore it. "The standard for passing the test was to type some words and press send", he wrote.
In another post, Musk suggested that employees who did not reply might get a second chance, but failing to respond again could lead to termination.
