Altcoin stands for “alternative coin”. Bitcoin (BTC), which launched in 2009, was the first cryptocurrency in the world. As of April 2022, there are over 18,000 cryptocurrencies in the world. Therefore, every cryptocurrency that isn’t Bitcoin is known as an ‘altcoin’.
Both cryptocurrency coins and tokens can be considered altcoins. Some of the most popular altcoins in the market are Ethereum (ETH), Tether (USDT), and Cardano (ADA).
