The crypto market's got a serious case of the shivers, with the Fear and Greed Index plummeting to a frosty 22. We're deep in Extreme Fear territory now, folks, with top coins flashing red - it's so cold out there, even the bears are wearing scarves!
But here's where it gets interesting: the latest weekly US jobs data just dropped. Both initial and continuing jobless claims fell more than expected, indicating a stronger-than-anticipated job market. A healthy job market typically means the Fed's less likely to cut interest rates significantly, which isn't the economic cooldown crypto investors were hoping for - potentially prolonging our crypto winter. 🥶
💬 Guess who's back
Nearly two weeks ago, the French authorities arrested Telegram’s founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, as part of an investigation into sketchy stuff happening on the platform. He was interrogated for 96 hours, went to court, was hit with multiple criminal charges and released on $5M bail (yet still can’t leave France).
And now, ladies and gents, he also broke his silence. The key takeaway from his statement? The man’s surprised he got arrested for a few reasons:
1. Telegram has an official representative in the EU, y not contact them?
2. Durov often visits the French consulate in Dubai, y not contact him first?
3. The crimes were committed by third parties on Telegram, y charge the CEO?
He also doubled down on Telegram’s commitment to free speech, saying they’re ready to say goodbye to countries that clash with such values. Case in point: Telegram got banned in Iran for refusing to shut down peaceful protest channels.
However, he pointed out that allowing free speech doesn’t mean Telegram is some Wild West. The platform takes down millions of harmful posts and channels daily and drops transparency reports to keep things in check.
Still, Durov admitted Telegram’s quick growth has made it easier for outlaws to ride through and abuse the app. But he promised to fix it and, in fact, is already on it.
Telegram has quietly updated its FAQ on illegal content moderation.
The response that used to look like this:
Now looks like this:
Basically, when it comes to illegal content, Telegram now emphasizes the platform’s “report feature” instead of privacy.
But don’t worry, partner 🤠—your chats are still safe. That privacy statement still appears in a section about copyright infringement.
