Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella enthusiastically announced this development on social media on November 20th. He highlighted Altman and Brockman's potential for Microsoft and emphasized the company's continued commitment to its partnership with OpenAI.
Altman retweeted Nadella's post and affirmed that "the mission continues."
Altman and Brockman's move to Microsoft follows a turbulent period at OpenAI. Altman was removed from his role as CEO by the board of directors on November 17th for issues related to his "not consistently candid <...> communications with the board."
Subsequently, Brockman stepped down from his position, expressing his shock and sadness over the events on social media. Brockman called his departure as "being removed."
During this transitional phase, OpenAI appointed Mira Murati, its former chief technology officer, as interim CEO for three days following Altman's departure.
Murati joined OpenAI in 2018 and played a key role in its evolution from a nonprofit research center. On November 20th, OpenAI announced Emmett Shear, former CEO and co-founder of Twitch's video streaming platform, as its new CEO, marking a new leadership direction for the company.
