Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin Calls for On-Chain Transparency at X
Key Takeaways
- Vitalik Buterin proposed using blockchain and zero-knowledge proofs to make X’s algorithm transparent and resistant to manipulation;
- He urged timestamping all interactions on-chain to ensure fair content visibility and prevent hidden moderation;
- Buterin and Davide Crapis called for X to publish its algorithm code and let users understand or adjust its free-speech objectives.

This idea was shared in an X post on December 15, which noted that content‑ranking decisions could be verified on‑chain to demonstrate fairness.
The proposal included timestamping posts, likes, and reposts on a public ledger so the platform could not manipulate timing or visibility.

Buterin also addressed concerns about how Elon Musk's leadership of X affects freedom of expression.
He stated that turning the platform into a "global totem pole for free speech", yet allowing it to "become a death star laser for coordinated hate sessions", undermines the principle of free communication.
Additionally, Buterin backed the idea put forward by the Ethereum Foundation's AI lead, Davide Crapis, who called for greater openness from X.
Crapis emphasized that if the platform claims to support free speech, it must state its algorithmic objectives. He called for users to be able to understand and adjust those goals.
One part of the proposal involves using ZK proofs to verify that every algorithmic choice on X adheres to predefined rules, without revealing confidential data.
Buterin further suggested that the entire algorithm code be published with a delay of one to two years.
Buterin recently shared an idea to help users plan for changing network fees. What did he say? Read the full story.
