Alumni Spotlight: Yellow Tail Tech Grad Stephon Becomes Linux System Administrator

After eight years in law enforcement, Stephon Treadwell made the bold decision to trade his badge for a command line. Today, he's proudly working as a Linux System Administrator at a government contractor company that supports the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Egg Harbor, New Jersey, thanks to his training at Yellow Tail Tech.

From Law Enforcement to Linux: A Big Leap

Before stepping into the world of IT, Stephon spent nearly a decade as a police officer, three of those years serving as a sergeant. “Becoming a system administrator wasn’t on my radar at first,” he admitted. “But one of my best friends is a software engineer. He showed me the potential in tech.”

Initially, Stephon tried his hand at software engineering. “It just didn’t suit me,” he said. But rather than give up on tech altogether, he explored different paths, eventually discovering system administration, and along with it, Yellow Tail Tech.

Discovering Yellow Tail Tech

Stephon found Yellow Tail Tech while learning Linux on his own. “Their videos kept popping up, so I checked them out,” he said. What he found was more than just tutorials—it was a full-blown career development program.

What really drew me in was the structure. They weren’t just teaching theory; they were preparing people for real jobs. They offered certifications, hands-on labs, and even an apprenticeship. That kind of support? You can’t find it everywhere.

Stephon made the leap and enrolled.

Why Yellow Tail Tech Stood Out

There are countless bootcamps and online programs promising to get students hired in tech, but Yellow Tail Tech stands apart with its hands-on training, career coaching, and industry certifications. For Stephon, that made all the difference.

“Yellow Tail Tech was hands-on from day one,” he explained. “You don’t just sit and watch. You learn by doing—by solving real problems in real environments.”

And their support doesn’t end at graduation.

What I love most is how Yellow Tail Tech keeps in touch even after you finish. That’s the Yellow Tail compassion, they really care. They check in, offer guidance, and stay involved in your success.”

Tackling Self-Doubt and Taking Control

Like many career changers, Stephon had his share of doubts. “My biggest fear was not getting hired,” he recalled. “I kept thinking these companies want experience. Even with certifications, how could I compete?”

But Yellow Tail Tech helped him build not just skills, but confidence. Through mentorship, mock interviews, and a community of peers and instructors, he began to see his potential.

“Once I started troubleshooting on my own, writing documentation, and reading technical materials, I felt more in control. That’s what gave me the edge in interviews.”

Gaining Industry Certifications

Certifications are a critical part of any IT professional’s resume, and Stephon knew this. He already had CompTIA Security+, a must-have for anyone aiming to break into government tech. At Yellow Tail Tech, he earned the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) credential, and after graduating, he went on to achieve the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification as well.

“Security+ opened the door. But RHCSA and RHCE gave me the technical depth. With automation becoming so important, I knew Ansible was a skill I needed.”

These certifications helped Stephon stand out—and ultimately land his current role.

What It’s Like Working in Tech

Today, Stephon manages Red Hat systems at a government contractor firm. His job includes checking systems, managing users, updating packages, troubleshooting, and maintaining security protocols. “It’s technical, sure, but it’s not overwhelming once you’re used to it,” he said.

His mornings start with checking emails and Slack, then reviewing tickets through a support system. “Some days, I’m creating authentication rules or documenting procedures. Other days, I’m solving issues or researching better solutions.”

He also makes time to study and sharpen his skills. “There’s always something new to learn—and I love that about tech.”

Better Pay, Better Quality of Life

When asked about the transition from policing to tech in terms of compensation, Stephon didn’t hesitate. “Tech pays significantly more,” he said. “The benefits in law enforcement were strong, but the salary in tech is by far the best I’ve ever had.”

He added, “The quality of life is just better now. I’m not micromanaged. I can take my time, focus on problem-solving, and actually enjoy my workday.”

Even though he now reports to the office Monday through Friday, the job has brought more flexibility, balance, and peace of mind. “It’s a laid-back environment,” Stephon shared. “And when something urgent happens, there’s a team ready to help. You’re never alone.”

Advice for Career Changers

For anyone considering a career switch, Stephon says it all comes down to choosing the right support system.

Don’t try to do it on your own. Yellow Tail Tech gave me the tools, the community, and the mindset to succeed.

He also reminds others that you don’t need a tech background to break into the field. “I came from a world where lives were on the line. Now, I’m in a world where uptime is the mission and I’m thriving.”
