AI Bots Fooled Reddit—New Privacy-Safe ID Checks Are Coming

Reddit, a social news and forum-style platform, is rolling out identity checks after discovering that a group of artificial intelligence (AI) bots secretly took part in conversations on its r/changemyview forum.

These bots were part of a research experiment by the University of Zurich, and the study was done without Reddit’s knowledge or user consent. Once the platform became aware of it, all accounts linked to the project were banned, and formal complaints were sent to the university.

Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, explained that the platform will ask for simple proof that users are human. In some cases, they may also need to confirm whether a person is an adult.

However, he stressed that Reddit will not ask for names or personal details. Instead, third-party services will handle the verification and only share the result—not the data—with Reddit.

Huffman also clarified that Reddit’s commitment to user anonymity does not change. He said the ability to stay anonymous has always been central to the platform, and that will not be sacrificed.

While Reddit already uses AI to help with tasks like spam control and enforcing rules, this incident has made it clear that more protections are needed. Bots are becoming more advanced and harder to spot, especially when designed to blend in. Huffman noted:

No solution is perfect—including the status quo—but we will do our best to preserve both the humanness and anonymity of Reddit.
