Hackers have leaked the source code of El Salvador’s state-run Bitcoin (BTC) wallet, Chivo, raising concerns about the safety of the country's digital infrastructure.

The code was leaked on the hacking forum BreachForums on April 23 by the hacker group CiberInteligenciaSV.

CiberInteligenciaSV also disclosed a file containing VPN credentials related to the Chivo Wallet’s ATM network.

The group posted a message saying:

This time I bring you the code that is inside the Bitcoin Chivo Wallet ATMs in El Salvador, remember that it is a government wallet, and as you know, we do not sell, we publish everything for free for you.

The local cybersecurity group VenariX alerted the public to this breach on social media.

This follows another severe breach earlier in April, where personal data for nearly the entire adult population of El Salvador, around 5.1 million people, was exposed.

The Salvadoran government has yet to formally address the issue or provide a statement.

In 2021, El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, promoting the Chivo wallet as an official medium for its citizens to engage with Bitcoin.

However, these security issues and the lack of communication from the authorities create uncertainty for Salvadorans regarding the safety of their data and the reliability of this state-backed digital wallet.
