Over $12 billion in bitcoin assets were taken from user wallets and exchange holdings in 2021 alone as a result of cryptocurrency scams and theft in the DeFi sector. The platform security flaws and improperly coded smart contracts accounted for some of this theft, but the majority was the result of cryptocurrency fraud, in which criminals preyed on newcomers to the market.
The industry needs to see these frauds and security flaws fixed if the crypto ecosystem is to truly become popular. Sadly, it might take some time before the industry finds a solution to the problem of smart contract scams.
